Anne Seymour Damer Comes Home

Bagshawe Fine Art is pleased to have brought to light and to offer for sale a hitherto unknown portrait of the remarkable Anne Seymour Damer (1748-1828) – arguably the most important British woman sculptor of the eighteenth century. A protegee of Horace Walpole and his successor at Strawberry Hill, Anne Damer is shown here by Daniel Gardner in what is believed to be the only oil portrait of her ‘at her trade’. Having found its way to the continent, this picture spent all of the twentieth century unrecognized in a private collection in France. With the increasing attention to early women artists and their work, the emergence of this beautiful and informal oil sketch is an important rediscovery. Click here for full details.
