Logsdail’s striking picture portrays Zelia (or Zelia-Mary) Hambro. Zelia was born on New Year’s Day in 1909 so she would have been eleven years of age at the time of the sitting. Her father was the merchant banker and conservative politician Sir Charles Eric Hambro (1872-1947), who was knighted in recognition of his services at the Ministry of Information during the First World War. Her mother was his first wife, Sybil Ridley-Smith. Zelia married first Patrick Humphreys in 1930 having three children with him and secondly John Osborne, by whom she had a further two children. She died in 1995.
